Description of Internship or Research Opportunity: Staff Biologist - Ecosystem Restoration/Grazers
Location: Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration (IC2R3), Summerland Key, Florida
Primary Function: This position is primarily to support Mote’s coral restoration research activities, including laboratory and aquaculture husbandry duties associated with Mote’s coral and grazer nursery systems, conducting laboratory and field research operations, outplanting of corals and other coral reef species to offshore restoration sites, field monitoring, construction and maintenance of equipment associated with those tasks, the collection, entry, and management of data in a laboratory and field setting, and assisting with the preparation of reports, manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed publications.

Primary Duties:

• Extensive aquaculture work including husbandry and production of grazers, corals, and other associated species in laboratory, nursery, and field settings
• Extensive experimental laboratory and field work involving small boat operations and SCUBA diving - set up and maintain experimental treatments, collect and enter data, assist with analysis and presentation of results in oral or poster presentations and peer-reviewed publications
• Frequent collection of live animals from multiple nearshore and offshore field sites.
• Underwater data collection and maintenance of underwater research structures.
• Assist with literature reviews, grant proposal development, and preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
• Some travel to remote field locations and laboratory facilities may be required

Additional duties will include assisting with various tasks related to the daily operation of a full-service marine laboratory, assisting with field and lab support to visiting scientists, and assisting with outreach and education activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications or Requirements:

• B.S. degree in the marine science, biological sciences, or related field from an accredited college or university
• Minimum SCUBA certification of Rescue Diver (Dive Master or higher preferred).
• Meet and maintain AAUS Scientific Diver standards, including medical requirements.
• Some knowledge of the corals and coral reef associated species of the Florida Reef Tract.
• Valid license to drive in the State of Florida.
• Lift heavy objects or equipment up to 50 lbs occasionally.
• Participate in heavy physical exertion while swimming or diving or hauling gear required
• Working knowledge of computer software (Windows, Word, Excel) for entering data required.
• Ability to be an adaptable and collegial member of the team, self-motivated and completes assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Normal hours are 8:00-5:00 M-F; however, weekend and evening hours will be required at times to support research and restoration objectives and experimental designs.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Previous research diving experience and AAUS Scientific Diver rating preferred.
• Previous aquaculture and husbandry experience is preferred.
• Prior experience operating vessels up to 25ft (USCG Captain’s License preferred)
• Basic knowledge of statistical analysis and report writing
• Basic knowledge of/familiarity with analytical software (e.g., R, MatLab, SPSS, SAS, ArcGIS) preferred.
