Description of Internship or Research Opportunity: Supported through a grant from the National Science Foundation International Research Experience for Students (IRES), this program will allow students to undertake individual research projects in the Bacalar Ecological Corridor in the Yucatan, Mexico. Laguna Bacalar lies within a globally unique ecological complex and environmentally sensitive corridor that dynamically connects terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine, and marine systems. This region contains highly transmissive karst geology, dynamic regional groundwater flow regimes, high and low growth tropical forests, dense freshwater/seawater mangrove stands, active sublacustrine springs and deep cenote sinkholes, estuarine gradients, and unique fringing reef areas of the 1000 km long Mesoamerican barrier coral reef. The Laguna also contains the world’s largest and most extensive living stromatolite complex.
Scholarships, Fellowships Associated with the Course: Travel/housing funding will be provided for the students admitted to the program in addition to modest funds to support the research. Students must have valid passport, evidence of up-to-date vaccinations, and the ability to work in physically demanding tropical field environments including on the water in small boats. Understanding of Spanish helpful but not required.
