Position Description:
Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

Principal Investigator, Marine Environmental ‘Omics

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is seeking a Principal Investigator in Science or Engineering who focuses on marine environmental omics. MBARI offers state-of-the-art facilities for developing and applying custom samplers and sensors, combined with advanced laboratory facilities to conduct environmental omics research. The incumbent is expected to play a leading role in defining research questions that environmental omics tools and techniques are poised to address in concert with other MBARI programs that focus on complementary observational and analytical methods. The latter programs include development and application of biogeochemical sensors, passive and active acoustics, optical systems fielded on a variety of crewed and uncrewed platforms, along with advanced data analytical techniques used at-sea and onshore. It is anticipated that work done to advance environmental omics will include the development of field-deployable sampling and analytical systems. Applicants do not necessarily require a background in engineering or instrument development to advance such work, but must be able to articulate compelling research questions that lend themselves to technological innovations which can be realized working with MBARI’s engineering and marine operations groups. Likewise, those with an engineering background should have a clear vision for how the innovations they propose relate to compelling science objectives. Outcomes of this work are expected to enhance fundamental ocean exploration in environments ranging from the upper water column, deep sea, and/or seafloor. Such advancements may also have applications in marine resource management and conservation, as well as the study and management of freshwater systems.

Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, MBARI is dedicated to merging science, engineering, and marine operations for advancing scientific research in the ocean. MBARI’s 2023-2033 Strategic Roadmap sets forth a decadal vision related to a series of interconnected scientific and engineering challenges that MBARI is uniquely poised to address. Principal Investigators are expected to foster interdisciplinary team-based initiatives that engage their colleagues from different divisions in pursuit of those challenges, as well as establish collaborations with others who may represent academic, non-profit, governmental, and/or for-profit organizations, consistent with MBARI’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

MBARI offers unique opportunities for advancing scientific research and technology development through a combination of internally and externally-funded programs. Projects that require science-engineering teaming are strongly encouraged. The successful candidate will be responsible for conceiving and executing original research in support of the Institute’s mission and purpose. Outcomes of the work should yield novel insights into the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems, and offer opportunities for disseminating the knowledge and technology gained to a broad audience.

A Doctorate or equivalent in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline with postdoctoral experience and success in conducting independent research is required, along with a record of significant, original, and promising research contributions. Applicants at an early- to mid-career stage (equivalent to an incoming Assistant to Associate Professor) with an ability to work in an interdisciplinary, team-oriented environment are encouraged to apply. PI/PEs organize and conduct at-sea work, and report directly to the Science or Engineering Division Chair.

MBARI, located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, offers exceptional access to the open ocean and deep sea. Ongoing research programs range across autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicle systems, control technologies, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ocean instrumentation, and information management. MBARI is home to approximately 225 employees, with shore facilities that include state-of-the-art science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and electrical fabrication shops, and dock facilities for MBARI vessels. Our marine operations division supports two MBARI-owned research ships, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), a fleet of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), deep-sea cabled observatory, and other sea-going assets. More information about MBARI and its current research and staff is available here.

MBARI enjoys cooperative relationships with a host of neighboring academic and government institutions, including Stanford University, Hopkins Marine Station, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the Naval Postgraduate School, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, California State University Monterey Bay, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, offering many opportunities for collaborative research and education. Our partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium also provides unique opportunities for public outreach and for engaging resource managers as well as policy makers.
