Position Description:

Labaree Scholars at Williams-Mystic

Williams-Mystic, the Coastal & Ocean Studies Program of Williams College and Mystic Seaport Museum (WM) seeks undergraduate applicants for the Labaree Scholar one-semester full scholarship.

One undergraduate accepted to Williams-Mystic each academic year may be selected as a Labaree Scholar, beginning with the fall 2024 semester. The recipient is awarded a comprehensive fee grant that covers the comprehensive fee for a semester at Williams-Mystic. Students must complete their WM application and be accepted prior to consideration.

While students of all majors study away at Williams-Mystic each year, the transformative experience of an interdisciplinary Williams-Mystic semester can be dramatically enhanced for a student pursuing an undergraduate degree in closely aligned disciplines, including environmental or marine science, environmental studies, environmental economics, public policy, climate studies or sustainability studies.

Believing that a semester at Williams-Mystic, along with access to personal and professional mentorship from the wide-ranging WM alumni network, could directly advance important thinking, writing, problem-solving, and change-making in these fields, a group of WM alumni established this scholarship and named it for the late Williams College Professor Ben Labaree, who founded WM in 1977.

Eligibility
Undergraduate students at U.S. or international colleges and universities in good academic and disciplinary standing are eligible for consideration. Students most often attend Williams-Mystic in their sophomore or junior year, but first-year students and seniors are considered on a case-by-case basis, pending approval from their sending institution.

Recipients are selected based on academic merit, faculty recommendations, a personal interview and academic alignment with a semester of study at Williams-Mystic in coastal and ocean studies.

About Williams-Mystic

Williams-Mystic is the coastal campus of Williams College, located in Mystic, CT. The one-semester study-away program is a partnership between Williams College and Mystic Seaport. Students from colleges and universities around the world come together to spend a college semester traveling to Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coast communities and ocean environments, engaging in independent research, and attending classes at the riverside museum campus in Mystic, CT.

Students at Williams-Mystic are on the front lines of studies in climate change, environmental justice and coastal resilience through the lens of four courses in maritime history, global ocean literature, marine and environmental policy, and marine science.

Williams-Mystic students meet and learn from local stakeholders while traveling on three field seminars: offshore sailing in the Caribbean or the Gulf of Maine, exploring the coastal zones of northern California or the Pacific Northwest, and learning about the dramatic sea rise and land loss story in southern Louisiana.
